WAYNE, N.J. -- Wayne detectives were on the trail of con artists who've been impersonating police officers in an attempt to get surveillance security recordings from commercial properties.

The would-be thieves were trying to take advantage of a special "Community Cam Share" that allows township residences and business with security cameras to share the recordings with police conducting investigations, Capt. Lawrence W. Martin said.

They called a commercial property owner along the Hamburg Turnpike and Terhune Drive corridor and "demanded to get copies of the commercial properties security system tapes for specific dates under the guise of investigating serious motor vehicle crashes," Martin said.

Wayne police wouldn't randomly call participants by phone and demand recordings without specifics, the captain said.

Detectives "would only contact these participating members in the pursuit of active criminal investigations or serious motor vehicle accidents," he said.

Martin also emphasized: "The 'Community Cam Share' computer data base programs have not been hacked, no disruption of our security has occurred, the integrity of the program remains secure," Martin said, "and the public should rest easy knowing that all precautions are in place to insure that the data base remains intact."

Wayne police "wear police uniforms with insignias, while some wear plain clothes depending on the assignment," the captain said. "However, all these members of the department possess formal Identification cards with badges to show their authenticity.

"The Wayne Police Department takes great pride in the service we provide to the community," Martin added. "We will not allow impersonators to ruin the reputation or use the Wayne police name for nefarious reasons."

If you're contacted by one of the impersonators, he asked that you immediately call the Wayne PD Detective Bureau: (973) 633-3530.

Likewise, Martin said, you can contact the bureau any time you get a phone call from someone who claims to be a police officer to confirm their authenticy.
