MAHWAH, N.J. – People from across Bergen County have been showing an overwhelming amount of support for the owner of a popular Mahwah restaurant who lost his Warwick, N.Y. home in an explosion on Tuesday.
By Thursday afternoon a GoFundMe campaign had raised more than $125,000 for Mahwah Bar & Grill owner Craig Kunisch, his wife Denise, and their three children.
The comments that went along with the donations were heartwarming.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. You have been generous within our Mahwah community & we hope you feel supported now from all of your neighboring communities,” Prema Moorthy wrote.
“I am so sorry for what you've been through but we are so thankful that your family is safe and sound,” wrote Julie Venter.
No one was seriously hurt in the explosion, according to police. Denise, waiting for her kids to come home from school, was the only one home when the explosion leveled the house. She somehow managed to escape with the family dog. She took to Facebook on Tuesday to let people know she was okay.
“I am in shock so not making much sense but I want you all to know I am ok. Feeling overwhelmed by the love & support of my family, friends, neighbors, this community. I really don't know what's going on or how I survived but I know for certain I have a guardian angel & beyond thankful to God. I love you all,” she wrote.
Kerri Fenton Foley of Warwick, who set up the GoFundMe sent an update to supporters on Thursday afternoon asking for prayers for the family.
“As we think of the ways to help, know this family loves the Lord and to pray for them, for after all, they have everything they could ever want or need; each other,” the note stated.
The family is also part of the fourth generation to own the popular Allendale Bar & Grill.
