MAHWAH, N.J. — As she sells customized pink t-shirts in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Nicole Lidestri of Mahwah has former Franklin Lakes resident Allison Carroll in mind.

Lidestri and members of the Franklin Lakes Recreational Cheer Squad that she coaches are donating all proceeds from the sale to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in memory of Carroll, who lost her battle with breast cancer last year. The shirts are expected to be delivered in a couple of weeks, but orders are being taken now.

Lidestri pitched the idea of a Pink Out Weekend to the Franklin Lakes Borough Council last year to run as part of the Mayor's Wellness Campaign, a 2012 initiative that coordinates programs designed to promote healthy activities and well-being in the community.

Thanks to her, more than $2,500 was donated to Susan G. Komen last year.

"My main focus is bringing the community together for such an important cause," said Lidestri, 24, the granddaughter of two breast cancer survivors.

Instead of having one Pink Out Weekend, Franklin Lakes will host Pink Out Month throughout October. Athletes, parents and fans are encouraged to wear pink apparel to all sporting events.

Lidestri hopes the borough-wide initiative will teach youngsters the importance of giving back.

"I want to help the kids raise awareness for something because it effects us all," said Lidestri, who's in her fourth year of coaching the squad. "It's important to donate to a cause like this that effects me personally and many other people."
