RAMSEY, N.J. — Ramsey Supt. Matthew Murphy has scheduled a discussion on Chapters 1 and 2 of “Most Likely to Succeed” — the book he recently encouraged community members to collectively read.
Murphy asks readers to mull several questions:
- The authors invite readers to consider the “most transformational aspects of your education.” What educational experience had the most “profound positive impact” on you?
- Chapter 1 ends with a description of learning featuring a “bicycle aptitude test.” Students learn about riding a bike but never how to ride a bike. How is this descriptive of public schools? Is there any part of our current curriculum that teaches students “how to” rather than “about?”
- The opening question of chapter two is an excellent question to ponder: What is the purpose of education? Why are we doing what we are doing? More importantly, are your ideas reflected in the actual curricula and teaching methods in our classes today?
Murphy will be posting the questions and comments on his Twitter account, @drmatthewmurphy, and is accepting dialogue via email at email@example.com.
