Altomara was chosen, along with other New Jersey students, on the basis of her academic and artistic scholarship in visual arts, the performing arts, or creative writing.

The majority of the Scholars are selected on the basis of broad academic achievement.

Each year over 4,000 candidates are identified for the academic component of the program, based on having scored exceptionally well on the SAT or the ACT.

New Jersey will select ten student scholars in March.
