Brandon Young, 23, and his passenger, 21-year-old Kimaley Barrett, both of Brooklyn, were cutting up stolen credit cards and tossing them out the window during the Monday afternoon chase, which responders told Daily Voice reached speeds of up to 80 miles an hour.
In what has become an exploding crime -- primarily involving rings from Brooklyn -- the pair previously tried using bogus credit cards to buy gift cards at the Route 17 Staples, Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney said.
Police were called when they returned just after noon Wednesday, he said.
Detective Brad Smith saw them get into a 2016 Nissan with Pennsylvania license plates and pull out of the parking lot onto the highway.
Marked units converged as Young hit the gas, Gurney said.
"Pieces of credit cards [were] being thrown out of the front passenger’s window just over the Mahwah border," he said.
Young pulled into a Mobil gas station near Moffat Road and police boxed the car in, Gurney said.
He then threw it in reverse trying to get back on the highway, "purposefully hitting a marked and unmarked unit," the chief said.
Detective Adam Macaluso was treated at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood for a minor injury sustained in the incident and released soon after, Gurney said.
Young and Barrett remained held on $100,000 bail each in the Bergen County Jail.
Young is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding and hindering apprehension.
Barett is charged with hindering and credit card fraud.
First appearances in Municipal Court were set for April 26.
Gurney thanked Mahwah police and the Bergen County Sheriff's Office for their assistance in the case.
