COURTESY NJ.COM : Army Staff Sgt. Timothy McGill was honored by friends, family, military officials and community members who crammed into the St. Paul R.C. Church Friday to pay respects to the fallen soldier.

“If he could say one thing right now, it would be to take all of this attention off of him,” his sister, Megan McGill, said following a civil ceremony where McGill was awarded military honors. “Because he was doing his job, and he was doing what he was so passionate about.”

McGill was killed Sept. 21 in the Paktia Province of Afghanistan, when an enemy combatant wearing an Afghan security forces uniform turned his gun on American soldiers, killing McGill and two others.

He was 30 years old.

The 6-foot-6 soldier was remembered by friends and family as a gentle giant at home and a warrior abroad, seeing combat in both Iraq and Afghanistan, where he met his end.
