Rainy day search continues for Mahwah attempted murder convict who cut monitoring bracelet

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Police have searched a 65-acre quarry in Suffern, a wide stretch of Route 287 through two states and the former Orange County home of convict Paul Kramer, who cut off his moitoring bracelet and fled New Jersey under cover of darkness early Thursday rather than be sent to prison for trying to kill a Lodi man.

Residents in several areas told CLIFFVIEW PILOT of police helicopters and tracking dogs that are being used to comb an area that stretches from North Jersey up into New York State near Middletown.

Meanwhile, out-stretched police tape remained in the parking lot at Ravi Continental Cuisine, a Rockland County restaurant where police found the blue Chrysler PT Cruiser belonging to Kramer’s mother Thursday afternoon, nearly 12 hours after he high-tailed it.

Kramer, who has been living with his parents on East Mahwah Road in Mahwah, was awaiting sentencing next month on an attempted murder conviction after he broke into a Lodi man’s house, lay in wait for him and then stabbed the victim repeatedly when he came home.

Around 5 a.m. Thursday, he cut his monitoring bracelet and made a break for it, Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“A manhunt on foot is under way,” the sheriff said at 5 p.m. Thursday, less than an hour after the car was found.

Saudino’s investigators were joined by reinforcements from the Mahwah and Suffern police departments and the Rockland County Sheriff’s patrol, as well as a New Jersey State Police helicopter, an area resident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. Police dogs were brought in, as well.

Authorities likely searched the area around Kramer’s former home in Orange County, N.Y. Records show he once lived in Wawayanda, near Middletown.
