Sheldon Lee, 46, a barber by trade, and 33-year-old Marlon M. Quiros of East Harlem blew by a Palisades Interstate Parkway police officer at Closter Dock Road in Alpine just after midnight May 9, initiating the pursuit, Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said Thursday.
PIP PD Officer Martin Clancy chased the pair for nearly four miles, with Clancy "losing site of the motorcycle at various points in the pursuit," PIP Police Chief Michael Coppola said at the time.
Officer Kevin Condus joined the chase as Clancy neared Exit 1 in Englewood Cliffs, Coppola said.
As they continued south toward the George Washington Bridge, the officers found Quiros's body and "a large debris field" from his 2010 Yamaha motorcycle at the Fletcher Avenue off-ramp, said Grewal, the prosecutor.
Lee kept going, he said.
Prosecutor’s detectives eventually identified Lee and arrested him Wednesday in New York City, the prosecutor said.
They charged him with eluding police with a risk of death or injury and hindering apprehension by providing false information.
Lee was being held by the NYPD as a fugitive from justice pending extradition proceedings, Grewal said.
The prosecutor thanked Palisades Interstate Parkway Police, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, which collected evidence.
