MAHWAH, N.J. – Mahwah police seized $31,000 in cash, along various forms of identification, more than a dozen cellphones and a number of credit and gift cards from two men who they suspect are part of a stolen ID ring.

After stopping the duo’s 2009 Chevrolet Malibu on Route 287 for tailgating, Officer Tyler Boucher said he was told a small amount of marijuana was in the trunk, Police Chief James N. Batelli said Tuesday.

During the search, Boucher found two shopping bags, “each containing bundles of U.S. currency packaged in such a manner that is consistent with criminal activity -- specifically narcotic sales,” Batelli said.

He also found two more bags of cash, along with more than 15 cellphones, various forms of ID not in either man’s name, the credit and gift cards and the pot, the chief said.

Officer Boucher was assisted at the scene by Lt. Scott Cherven, Officer John Lange, K-9 Remco and handler Officer Robert Rapp.

Arrested were the driver, 33-year-old Curt Peterkin, of Derby, CT, and his passenger, Dwayne Walker, 39, of the Bronx.

The vehicle was impounded.

Peterkin was charged with possession of marijuana and Walker with transporting property believed to be derived from criminal activity and possession of stolen credit cards, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Batelli said.

“There is an ongoing investigation with multiple agencies based upon the items found in the vehicle,” the chief said.
