Mahwah PBA: Wear A Helmet, Get Free Ice Cream

MAHWAH, N.J. -- Mahwah youngsters out having fun will want police to "ticket" them -- for wearing helmets.

Children wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle, skateboard, roller skates/blades, or razor scooter in town could get a free small ice cream cone at the Dairy Queen on Franklin Turnpike.

Children wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle, skateboard, roller skates/blades, or razor scooter in town can get a free small ice cream cone at the Dairy Queen on Franklin Turnpike if a township police officer spots them, said Rosario Zito, president of Mahwah PBA Local #143.

"The goal of this program is to not only encourage kids to wear their helmets but also to create the opportunity for positive interactions between Mahwah officers and the youth of our town," Zito said.

"We would like to remind everyone that bicycle helmets are required by law to be worn by any child under the age of 17, even if it's for a short ride down the street," he added.

"Please join with us in promoting safe habits and preventing serious injuries by encouraging your children and their friends to wear their helmets," Zito said.
