Mahwah kids police academy needs your help making Guinness World Record smiley face

The current Guinness World Record is 768 people, set in Croatia on May 6, but Mahwah police hope to shatter that mark this Thursday, when the 5th annual Leadership Academy of youngsters from grades 8 through 11 and their supporters gather to create the largest-ever human smiley face. They’ll need your help, though.

“I believe the last time a group even attempted a Guinness Record in Bergen County was over 15 years ago,” Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli said.

“We have scheduled a Black Hawk helicopter to fly over and take aerial photographs and also have several former New York Giants players who will be attending to sign autographs.”

The fifth annual Leadership Academy (not to be confused with the Junior Police Academy, which is a sponsor) began yesterday and runs through Friday.

It’s the only one of its kind, Batelli said, and this year includes 165 students.

The chief said the group is hoping for AT LEAST 2,000 participants who can be part of history.
