The indictment returned last month accuses 44-year-old William Almonte of "causing bodily injury" to the victim "by recklessly driving an automobile" on May 29, 2016 in violation of state drunk-driving law.

The indictment charges Almonte, a Passaic-born, married father of three who has been extremely active in township recreational basketball programs, with assault by auto and DWI.

The girl's father was picking her up in his car on Aspen Court around 9 p.m. last May 29 when Almonte got into his 2016 Ford Mustang, put it in reverse and hit the teenager in his driveway, Police Chief James Batelli said at the time.

He then took off, the chief said.

Mahwah Ambulance Corps members and paramedics responded and treated the girl, who was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.
