UPDATE: A tractor-trailer was stopped on the shoulder when it was rear-ended by a Subaru wagon on northbound Route 287 near Exit 65 in Mahwah, killing its driver, around 2:15 p.m., police at the scene confirmed this afternoon.
Valley Hospital paramedics pronounced the death after joining Mahwah and New Jersey State police at the scene, a little over a mile from Route 17, Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
The center and right lane remained closed, with traffic crawling in the left lane, past rush hour.
Mahwah Rescue 1 was summoned just before 6:30 p.m. to remove 69-year-old Steve Faust of Woodmere from his 2011 Outback, authorities said.
