JC shootings justified, Hudson prosecutor says

Ed DeFazio never pulled punches before, and he’s not about to start. Wasting no time, the Hudson County prosecutor said he believes Jersey City police were completely justified in a shootout early Thursday that left five officers wounded and two armed residents dead.

Officer Marc DiNardo, 37, suffered the worst after being shot in the face when a tactical team of officers stormed the apartment where the thugs had been holed up.

Also critically injured was Officer Michael Camacho, 25.

Officer Frank Molina Jr., 35, was released from Jersey City Medical Center yesterday after a visit from Gov. Jon Corzine.

“These are police officers who make you proud,” DeFazio told The New York Times.

Meanwhile, tenants have returned to the building and the neighborhood — has quieted down.

“To stay or leave is a difficult decision to make in the wake of what happened,” one neighbor said in a Facebook posting. “But if folks stay on, the neighborhood is only gonna get better….Folks’ resolve in making the neighborhood happen is what counts in the end.”

A side-by-side mix of hard-working professionals with kids, along with ex-cons and would-be gangstas, the Jersey City neighborhood is dealing with a clash of cultures mostly seen in black communities in larger cities, from Bridgeport to Baltimore.

“Having seen it first hand, my first thought was to get out,” one resident said in a posting. “Still mulling it over for sure, but if we bond together and make a group effort to make some actual change, I would love to be a continued part of the rebirth!”

“Of course, it’s not perfect,” another wrote, “but I know so many wonderful people in this community that it’s so hard to give that up to move to the burbs.”
