Officer Tyler Boucher suspected there were drugs in the vehicle after stopping it on Route 287 for a traffic violation, Police Chief James N. Batelli told Daily Voice.

The driver, 32-year-old Rachel E. Topping of Salida, Colorado, refused to consent to a search, after which K-9 Remco (with Officer Robert Rapp) indicated the presence of drugs, the chief said.

Police impounded the vehicle while seeking a search warrant, assisted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Batelli said.

Topping and her passenger, 27-year-old Trevor D. Green of Butler, Pennsylvania, were taken to a local hotel to wait for their vehicle while detectives obtained a judge’s approval of the warrant.

In the vehicle, Batelli said police found:

  • Crystal methamphetamine;
  • Cocaine;
  • MDMA/Ecstasy;
  • Prescription pain pills;
  • Xanax;
  • Marijuana;
  • Various drug paraphernalia;
  • A machete

Roughly $2,000 in suspected drug money, which was seized pending forfeiture action.

Police returned to the hotel, the chief said, but it turned out Green and Topping never checked in.

Warrants were issued for their arrests on a variety of drug and weapons charges, he said.

Anyone who knows where to find Green or Topping is asked to contact Detective Eric Larsen at (201) 529-1000, ext. 217. Or anonymously submit information to: tips@mahwahpd.org.
