Hilario Galvez was riding with a group of friends in Tomkins Cove when the accident occurred, Stony Point Police said Monday morning.

The crash occurred on Buckberg Road in Tomkins Cove at around 9:30 a.m., Stony Point Police said.

The bicyclist, traveling northerly down a very steep portion of the road approaching Mott Farm Road, left the roadway and crashed in a wooded area, said police.

Stony Point Police, Stony Point Ambulance and Rockland paramedics responded but the bicyclist died as a result of his injuries on the scene, according to police.

The bicyclist was with a group of about eight riders each riding down the hill separately, according to police.

Police said there is no reason to believe that any other bicyclist or vehicle was involved and nothing appears to be suspicious.

Speed, road terrain and condition and mechanical failure will be considered by detectives as well as an autopsy to be conducted by the Rockland ME office. Rockland Sheriff BCI also responded and is assisting with the investigation.
