“As the American flag is lowered in front of the Police Officer Christopher Goodell Public Safely Building in his memory let us remember all the good that Chris has done,” Waldwick Mayor Thomas Giordano wrote in a message to residents.
“Chris was a dedicated and caring police officer with a wonderful spirit of kindness, service, and compassion,” Giordano also wrote.
Goodell, 32, joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from Waldwick High School in 2000. He served with the Waldwick Police Department for five years.
Goodell was working a radar detail in his unmarked cruiser, parked on the shoulder of southbound Route 17, when it was struck by an 18-wheeler the morning of July 17, 2014.
