MAHWAH, N.J. — Schoolchildren, municipal officials and community members gathered in Veteran's Memorial Park on Wednesday morning under cloudy skies for Mahwah's annual Veteran's Day ceremony.
The Mahwah High School Choir opened the event with the National Anthem following the Pledge of Allegiance. Students from the Academy of St. Paul presented a memorial wreath.
"The purpose of war is peace," Mayor William Laforet said. "The only way to maintain peace is to be prepared. God bless our community and our veterans."
Veterans Frank Calandrillo, Jr., of American Legion Post 531 and Gary Mondroy, commander of VFW Post 7124, addressed the audience.
"We must honor all [veterans'] families and not just with blue and gold-star banners but with compassionate hearts," Calandrillo told them.
"It is a cost — a blood, sweat and sacrifice," he said. "That has produced and protected the greatest nation on earth."
