MAHWAH, N.J. — The prolonged high heat and lack of rain is causing a local water emergency, prompting Mahwah Water to begin Tier 2 water restrictions on Thursday, Sept. 10.
"I have received a recommendation from the Township Water Department superintendent that a reduction in the amount of water obtained from the United Water interconnection, excessive demand and a prolonged period of high temperature and lack of rain have caused a local emergency," Mayor Bill Laforet told Daily Voice.
The following restrictions are in place as of 6 a.m. Sept. 10:
Outdoor watering is prohibited all day on Sundays.
Outdoor watering is prohibited on all days between 12midnight and 6 a.m.
Outdoor watering is permitted at even numbered street address properties on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Odd numbered properties on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
- Watering hours are limited to 6 to 9 a.m. for in-ground watering systems, and 6 to 9 p.m. for above-ground watering systems.
- Those properties watered with an in ground sprinkler system shall not also be watered with aboveground hose-fed sprinklers.
- Condominium associations, community associations and multi-family properties comprising 10 or more multifamily units and/or 10 or more acres with multiple outdoor irrigation watering zones may water during morning or evening allotted hours on an odd/even basis, provided the maximum watering per zone is limited to one hour per day.
