Jacob Ziff and his peers from Temple Beth Or’s 2016 Confirmation Class trekked to the nation’s capital for a Religious Action Center seminar called L’Taken — to repair.
The highlight of Ziff’s trip was lobbying for embryonic stem cell research before U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ).
“It teaches us how to be involved in major issues like gun control, Israel, [and] LGBT rights,” the 16-year-old said.
Ziff and his class also visited the Holocaust Museum, the Smithsonian, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s monument.
The best part of the trip for Ziff was the Havdallah service – the closure to Shabbat services – on the steps of the Thomas Jefferson memorial, he said.
“There were 400 kids with candles, singing in Hebrew, while looking out across the water at the Washington Monument,” Ziff said. “It took my breath away.”
