The man – identified only as Gerard D. by the New Jersey Lottery – bought the lucky Mega Millions ticket at the Deli Mart located at 789 Main Street in Hackensack, lottery officials said.

On the morning after the drawing, he went to the deli to pick up a coffee and get the results. Once he got back to his car and checked the numbers, he realized he had a ticket worth $1 million. “He was elated,” lottery officials said.

Gerard quickly went home to tell his family, and a “joyous celebration began,” lottery officials said.

Gerard said he would use the winnings to pay off some bills, and it gives him and his family a lot of comfort and financial stability as retirement approaches.
