PARAMUS, N.J. -- Thanks to employees at Ashley Furniture HomeStore in Paramus, those fighting cancer at The Valley Hospital are receiving a boost.

Ashley employees recently presented a check of $300 to The Valley Hospital Foundation, directing the funds to the hospital's Complementary Therapies/Integrative Healing program, which operates within Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care.

For one Ashley Furniture employee, the cause is deeply personal. Jim Miller, who works in the Paramus store, lost his wife to breast cancer five years ago. When the store was deciding on where to donate funds through their annual charity drive, he explained to his colleagues how Valley provided a unique type of support for his late wife during her cancer treatment.

“The social worker at Valley helped my wife cope with the physical changes and maintain her dignity," he said. "Overall, she made the situation a lot less difficult.” Inspired by Miller's firsthand account, the Ashley employees pooled their donations to support Valley.

Valley’s Complementary Therapies/Integrative Healing program offers therapies that have been proven to be effective in reducing fatigue, anxiety, stress and pain perception for men and women undergoing and recovering from cancer treatment.

“We don’t just treat the disease – we treat the whole patient and assist with things like coping with hair loss, managing financial stress and creating a community of support through groups and services,” said Brooke Laster, a licensed clinical social worker at Valley. “These kinds of services are aimed to help our patients cope with the challenges that they encounter.”
